Artificial intelligence holds great promise for healthcare and medicine, with advancements made since the introduction of medically-tuned large language models (LLMs) like Med-PaLM in 2022 and 2023. Google Research has developed Med-PaLM 2 and now introduces MedLM, a family of foundation models tailored for healthcare use cases. MedLM is accessible to Google Cloud customers in the US via Vertex AI platform and in preview in select global markets. Comprising two models, MedLM offers flexibility for diverse healthcare needs, from basic tasks to complex workflows. These models, informed by customer feedback, cater to various applications such as summarizing conversations and medication searches. Further developments, including Gemini-based models, are planned to enhance MedLM's capabilities. Several companies are already integrating MedLM into their solutions or expanding their testing, highlighting its potential impact in healthcare.
