In 2013, I started a podcast. In my wildest dreams, I never thought it would lead me to where I am today.
I had wanted to grow my web design and social media consulting business. I wanted to be featured on podcasts. Instead, I created my own. Lady Business Radio was one of the first women's entrepreneurial interview shows. I went to the New Media Expo to see if I could learn how to grow it into something BIG, and when I got a chance to MEET those dudes, maybe see if they had any advice, what they had to offer was, frankly, less than stellar.
I went to lunch one day with some lady podcasting colleagues at that conference, and we commiserated over the lack of female mentors in podcasting. I went home from New Media Expo and immediately started a Facebook group, called Women Who Podcast. I just wanted to have those brilliant women at my fingertips. I had a billion more questions, and their advice was so much more on par with what I wanted to accomplish. Within seconds of adding my friend Elsie Escobar, she messaged me. "Can I invite some people?" she said. I mean, why not? I didn't realize she had been working in podcasting for almost 10 years already! Within a week the group had 100 women in it. Shortly after, we reached 1000. Elsie and I renamed the group She Podcasts and started a podcast of the same name.
The growth rate was staggering, and still is. At the time I'm writing this, we are about to cross the 20,000 members mark.
In 2019, I started making a plan for an event. In April 2019 we launched a Kickstarter, thinking that if the community really wanted an event, they'd buy tickets. I set the goal at $25,000.
Boy, did they buy tickets. Tickets and sponsorships flew out the door, with no venue, no speakers, no agenda. People bought on the full faith and desire for a women's podcasting conference. We raised 50,000 in 6 weeks and landed at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis for our first She Podcasts LIVE in October, 2019.
For 2021, we've moved out west to Scottsdale, Arizona. We've limited our seating to account for comfort levels during times of pandemic. We are enhancing our virtual ticket to be more interactive and have added a track for those interested in serving their community or wanting to engage in better self care.
We are 100% committed to supporting our community with education, live and virtual events, and as much mentorship as we can.
