Maryam Haghighi is the first Director of Data Science at the Bank of Canada. With a stellar track record in leading data-driven innovation, emerging technologies and transformation in public and private sectors, she is responsible for the vision and development of strategies in digital, data, quantum computing and information technology. A strategic and collaborative leader and influencer who has advanced key files in a variety of economic sectors. Proven expertise to attract top tier talent and build diverse and globally-recognized multidisciplinary teams. Canada’s delegate to international advisory panels under the United Nations. Experienced in crafting compelling narratives for innovation and transformation within the context of complex ecosystems and policy issues, such as a central bank.
Over the course of her career, Maryam has overseen the implementation of sophisticated solutions for multi-billion-dollar projects on the ground and in the skies. She led the team that pioneered the first ever space-based analytics system in a satellite constellation. Maryam was applauded for leading the largest analytics memorandum to cabinet for the creation of a highly successful nation-wide security program that drove the employment of thousands of diverse talent. She has a reputation of building consensus and a thorough understanding of labour relations and collective bargaining agreements.
Maryam holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Ottawa, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in phylogenetic analysis. She has been a consultant for start-ups, patent processes, and research programs. Maryam has a deep passion for interdisciplinary work as well as supporting women in STEM. She is active in community outreach and has served on grants-advisory panels and as a mentor and judge for scientific competitions. A recognized leader in the world of data and technology, Maryam is frequently invited to share her experience at national and international academic, industry and public sector events as a keynote speaker, panelist and moderator.
She is a board member at philanthropic and not-for-profit organizations. When not working, she can be found taking hikes in nature, learning about oceans, boats, airplanes and space, volunteering with local shelters and rescue organizations.
