Nate Haken

Nate Haken is a Programs Director at FFP. He leads the development of the Conflict Assessment System Tool (CAST) for conflict early warning and prevention in weak and fragile states and directs the research for the Fragile States Index, published annually. In Nigeria he is the Primary Advisor for the Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta's (PIND) early warning and peacebuilding portfolio. He is the project lead, developing the Country Resilience and Fragility Assessment (CRFA) with the African Development Bank. Field work conducted with FFP has included activities in Sierra Leone, Senegal, Zimbabwe, Chad, Ghana, Madagascar, Cote d’Ivoire, Uganda, Liberia, Turkey, Nigeria, and Korea. He holds an M.A. International Communication from American University. He co-authored a book with Patricia Taft title, Violence in Nigeria: Patterns and Trends, published by Springer in 2015. Other publications include chapters, articles and papers in the Christian Science Monitor, Foreign Policy, the Military Operations Research Society Journal, and the Handbook of Computational Approaches to Counterterrorism. Before joining FFP, Haken was a television producer at Voice of America and a newspaper reporter in Illinois. He also worked as a French interpreter for asylum seekers and torture survivors in the U.S.
