There are business builders and business runners. The best learn how to do both. With over 18 years of growing subscription-based businesses and maintaining 90% value retention once amassed, I have learned to do both effectively. This mainly comprises hiring, promoting, and developing best-in-class executive teams around me, especially at Mintel.
My leadership philosophy goes back to high school sports. Even at an early age, I was comfortable bringing people together and inspiring a team for a common purpose. I didn’t ignore uncomfortable situations and stepped in to get the team to talk about them. I encouraged them to realize that working together allowed us to achieve our goals. This lesson has stayed with me all of my life.
Now in business, my fascination is studying leadership principles and applying them every day. This enables me to help people develop into their full potential. As a senior leader, a key skillset is talent identification and development.
My early career at Mintel started in Account Management - even though I didn’t have a sales background. However, in my first year, having significantly exceeded my sales quota, I achieved Top Global Sales Representative status, which I attribute to humility and hard work.
From my success in the US, I was transferred to London, UK as VP Sales and led the CPG (Consumer Packaged Goods) sales team in EMEA. Coming from a small town in Ohio and working with an international team from 12 countries gave me the confidence that my leadership style in developing people is universally true.
Under my leadership, EMEA had the 3 best years in a decade. That success led me back to the US to turn around a larger business of ours.
The foundation of my leadership style comes from four core values. I look for these key characteristics in people I surround myself with:
-Grit
-Humility
-Emotional Intelligence
-Pragmatic optimism
Within my team today, I nourish a lifelong learning culture to ensure constant evolution, and I demand the absolute best from those around me. But a true leader understands both their strengths and weaknesses and as such, I consciously surround myself with talent and external mentors that more than make up for my deficiencies.
With the right people in the right seats, combined with the right tools and processes, Mintel’s goal is to be the best research agency in the world.
